The Leading African Women in Food Fellowship is an ambitious program aimed at supporting changemakers who are making outstanding contributions/impact in the African food ecosystem. This initiative amplifies, celebrates, champions, and advances the work of these female food changemakers.
Brigitha Faustin Chuwa is a Tanzanian entrepreneur, agribusiness leader, and advocate for sustainable agriculture, food security, and women’s economic empowerment. She is the Founder and CEO of OBRI Africa, a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to eradicating poverty, hunger, and malnutrition through sustainable agriculture and fortified edible oil processing in Tanzania.
Under her leadership, OBRI Africa has emerged as a key player in addressing Tanzania’s growing demand for edible oil, expanding by over 70% annually while creating economic opportunities for thousands of smallholder farmers, particularly women. The company sources sunflower seeds directly from 9,872 women farmers, supporting them with fair trade opportunities, regenerative agriculture training, and access to market linkages.
Brigitha is deeply committed to environmental sustainability and ethical sourcing, ensuring OBRI Africa’s operations align with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly No Poverty (SDG 1), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Climate Action (SDG 13). Through OBRI Africa, she is driving positive change by decarbonizing the food system, empowering women-led agricultural cooperatives, and making affordable, nutritious sunflower cooking oil accessible to over ten million Tanzanians daily.
As a visionary entrepreneur, Brigitha’s work is not only transforming Tanzania’s edible oil industry but also championing a more just, equitable, and sustainable food system for future generations.
