The Leading African Women in Food Fellowship is an ambitious program aimed at supporting changemakers who are making outstanding contributions/impact in the African food ecosystem. This initiative amplifies, celebrates, champions, and advances the work of these female food changemakers.
Christine Atieno Ager is a food systems innovator and sustainability leader serving as the Head of Programs at Vermi-Farm Initiative, a pioneering organisation advancing climate-resilient agriculture across Sub-Saharan Africa. Her work addresses some of the most pressing challenges faced by smallholder farmers: climate volatility, rising production costs, and limited access to technology and markets.
At the core of Vermi-Farm’s impact is the Vermi-Farm DigiShamba, a low-cost, electrocultured smart greenhouse designed to protect crops from extreme weather conditions while ensuring consistent, high-quality yields. Under Christine’s programmatic leadership, the initiative integrates sustainable agriculture and circular economy solutions, using vermicomposting to transform food waste into premium organic fertilisers that significantly reduce input costs and boost productivity.
Beyond primary production, Christine champions innovative models that connect urban consumers to affordable, nutritious food through decentralised food stations, strengthening short food value chains. With a strong focus on women and youth empowerment, she leads initiatives that expand access to training, productive resources, and financing building a more inclusive, resilient, and future-ready African food ecosystem.
