Joyce Atuhaire

Joyce Atuhaire is a social entrepreneur and advocate of gender equality and inclusion. With a decade of experience, she has been instrumental in promoting gender inclusivity within agricultural value chains and ensuring equitable representation for women in the sector. Joyce is the chairperson of the Africa Women Agribusiness Network Uganda (AWAN). This membership organization unites 250 women entrepreneurs operating at various levels of agri-food value chains. 

From April 2022 to March 2023, Joyce held the role of Uganda's National Coordinator for the Women's Leadership for Financial Inclusion and Economic Recovery Project. Implemented by the Graca Machel Trust (GMT) across 11 African countries, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In Uganda, Joyce successfully coordinated activities that involved engaging government ministries, departments, agencies, financial institutions, and other private actors. Her efforts focused on advocating for gender-inclusive COVID-19 economic recovery strategies, prioritizing women's empowerment, and fostering accountability for policy actions. 

As a social entrepreneur, Joyce Atuhaire co-founded Athari Ventures Limited, a social enterprise specializing in healthy, nutritious, and chemical-free solar-dried fruits and vegetables for local and export markets. Through Athari Ventures, Joyce has empowered 200 women smallholder farmers in central Uganda by reducing post-harvest losses and facilitating access to reliable formal markets as out-growers. Additionally, she is a co-founder of Aliter Consults Limited, a company involved in the last-mile distribution of agricultural productivity-enhancing products, including high-yielding seeds, crop protection, and post-harvest handling materials. Aliter Consults adopts inclusive models such as engaging women village agents and providing input credits to enhance access for women smallholder farmers and other special groups. 

Joyce holds an MSc in Organizational Leadership from South Eastern University, USA, and a Bachelor of Management Science from Kyambogo University.
