The Leading African Women in Food Fellowship is an ambitious program aimed at supporting changemakers who are making outstanding contributions/impact in the African food ecosystem. This initiative amplifies, celebrates, champions, and advances the work of these female food changemakers.
Nozipho Lieketseng Soka is an agricultural entrepreneur and food security advocate dedicated to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems across Africa. She is the founder of Dee-Y Dairy and Rea Jala Veggies, enterprises focused on sustainable milk and vegetable production that prioritize hygiene, animal welfare, resource efficiency, and community impact.
Through Dee-Y Dairy, Nozipho oversees environmentally responsible milk production while supporting local dairy farmers. A major milestone in her journey was securing a supply partnership with a leading retail chain—ensuring consistent market access for fresh milk and strengthening value-chain stability for smallholder producers.
At Rea Jala Veggies, she contributes directly to food and nutrition security by cultivating nutrient-dense crops such as spinach and broccoli across four hectares of farmland. The enterprise supplies fresh produce to open markets and major retailers, including Boxer, expanding access to affordable, healthy food for surrounding communities.
Beyond commercial production, Nozipho’s work is deeply rooted in social impact and capacity building. Through the Fepa Foundation, she empowers underprivileged communities with practical agricultural and food security skills. Her hands-on training workshops equip individuals to establish home gardens, promoting self-sufficiency, improved nutrition, and resilience against food insecurity.
Recognizing the importance of early exposure and mentorship, Nozipho also leads career-orientation workshops for high school students, introducing them to diverse opportunities within the agricultural sector—from agronomy and agricultural economics to veterinary sciences and food production. By broadening young people’s perspectives, she is helping to cultivate the next generation of African agricultural leaders.
Her contributions have received national and international recognition. In 2024, Nozipho was selected for the Professional Fellows Program: Advancing Women in Agriculture Fellowship at Michigan State University, supported by the U.S. Department of State—one of only two South Africans chosen. In 2023, she was named among South Africa’s Top 200 Young South Africans in recognition of her impact in agriculture and food security.
Looking ahead, Nozipho remains committed to strengthening sustainable food systems, empowering marginalized communities, and inspiring young Africans to view agriculture as a viable, dignified, and impactful career pathway. Through innovation, education, and inclusive production models, she continues to work toward a more food-secure and resilient Africa.
