The Leading African Women in Food Fellowship is an ambitious program aimed at supporting changemakers who are making outstanding contributions/impact in the African food ecosystem. This initiative amplifies, celebrates, champions, and advances the work of these female food changemakers.
Sandra Ejang Elobu is the Co-founder and CEO of Western Silk Road Limited (Asali Wa Moyo Honey), a company dedicated to empowering Ugandan farmers through beekeeping while delivering pure, natural honey and wellness products to consumers. Committed to sustainability and economic inclusion, Sandra leads initiatives that uplift smallholder farmers—85% of whom are women—by providing technical training, modern beekeeping equipment, and a guaranteed buyback program that ensures immediate value for their work.
Western Silk Road operates across 10+ districts in Uganda, including Karamoja and Northern Uganda, working with a network of over 2,000 farmers. The company processes and markets over 10 tonnes of honey annually, supplying 100+ supermarkets locally and expanding into international markets. By integrating sustainable apiculture and agroecological practices, Sandra is driving climate-smart agriculture, enhancing food security, and protecting biodiversity while strengthening rural economies.
A leader in the beekeeping value chain, Sandra is not only practicing beekeeping herself but also providing technical advisory and consultancy services, ensuring that farmers have access to better practices and long-term market opportunities. Through Western Silk Road, she is revolutionizing smallholder farming in Uganda, creating a more inclusive, sustainable, and profitable future for beekeepers.
